NINETY MEN NOW WORKING ON NEW SUMMIT ROAD.

PROGRESS SLOW, BUT SHOULD IMPROVE SOON

About ninety men are now engaged on the construction of the new Summit Road from the Sign of the Kiwi to Mount Pleasant, the work at present being concentrated on a section of about half a mile in. length from Dyer’s Pass Road towards Mount Pleasant.

This work is of a fairly heavy nature but, when the section of about half a mile is completed, there will be a long length of comparatively easy going and much better progress will be made. As the construction now in hand is immediately above Dyer’s Pass Road it is necessary to station two men on the road to warn traffic of the danger from blasting operations Blasting takes place four times daily, and on account of the risk of accident instructions have been issued by the Public Works Department, and are being rigidly carried out, that no man must be within 200 yards of a chare* when it is fired.

The first wages payment made by the Public Works Department in connection with the job indicated that the men employed were not accus tomed to th ework, and in order that they should be able to earn more money the rates have since been revised.
