POLICE OFFICIALS REBUKED FOR SUPPRESSING EVIDENCE.

Comments Made by Judge After Trial of Naval Man Cause Sensation in Suva. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 10. The Suva correspondent of the “ Star ” says that in the case of George Lund of H.M.S. Laburnum who was chdrged with a serious offence against a Fijian boy, and who was acquitted by the jury after a few minutes’ retirement, the Chief Justice (a retired naval captain), rebuked the police for suppressing evidence. Never before in the history of Fiji has the police force been so drastically dealt with from the Bench. His Honor said that the case was one surrounded with circumstances and incidents which, happily, in his experience, did not often exist. The suppression of Dr Harper’s evidence by the police was a grave scandal. If such a thing were allowed in Suva, no one would be safe. The state of affairs did not reflect credit on any of the police, from the lowest to the highest. The judge specially rebuked the officer in charge of ; the case, and his address caused a sensation in Suva.
