AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS COMPETE AT PAEROA.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 10. The Australian champions, Noel Ryan and Owen Griffiths, competed at the Paeroa . Swimming Club’s carnival in the municipal baths last evening. A feature was the defeat of Griffiths in the 100yds invitation race by K. Strange, of the Paeroa Club, who started eight seconds before Griffiths. Griffiths made a beautiful turn after the first length, but failed to get a good turn for the final lap, and in a great finish Strange won by a touch, with Page (9sec) half a yard away third, the time being lmin 11 2-ssec. In the 220yds Invitation Handicap, the Australian champion, Ryan, gave an inspiring display. Giving away up to 15 seconds handicap, he caught his two opponents at the fourth turn, and from then on had an easy victory, finishing the distance in 2min 40Jsec. The first 66 2-5 yards was done in 41sec and 133 1-3 yards in lmin 30sec.
