TRAFFIC INSPECTOR WAS OFFERED BRIBE.
EVIDENCE IS GIVEN IN SPEEDING CASE. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 10. An offer of a new suit if he would overlook an offence of speeding in a motor-car was made to a traffic inspector of the Main Highways Board by a passenger in a taxi driven by Reginald Lincoln, of Auckland, who was fined £4 and costs at the Otahuhu Police Court for exceeding the speed limit on the Great South Road. Mr Barrett, the inspector, said that he followed tb~ taxi on November 15. It was doing miles an hour
through Papatoetoe between two lines of motor-cars when a band was playing on the school corner. A chase followed, and it was not until the car had reached Runciman that he was able to charge the driver with speeding. There were two passengers, both of whom smelt of liquor. One passenger handed the witness a card, and said: “If you turn up tomorrow morning can get a new suit out of that.” The case was not defended.
