MOTORISTS OBJECT TO CHANGE IN NAME OF “ARTHUR’S PASS.”
The General Council of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last night, Mr F. W. Freeman presiding. The Roads Committee reported that Mr F. Langbein had given orders for the milestone seventeen miles from Springfield, which was recently removed, to he replaced. It was decided to ask the Chief Postmaster to install a public telephone at Goose Bay. It was decided to prohibit shooting on the Hanmer Reserve. The Ashburton Branch was given authority to spend £35 on improvements on the camping-ground at the Railway Reserve. It was decided to support the request of the South Marlborough Progress League, urging the Government to erect a bridge on the Conway on the inland route, between Waiau and Kaikoura The Surveyor-General advised that he had not heard of a movement to change the name of Arthur’s Pass to “Arthur Pass.” He assured the association that nothing would be done in the way of dissociating Mr A. D. Dobson’s name from the Pass The tendency was now to drop unnecessary letters in names except where the letters were necessary for euphony “Arthur Pass” was slightly more euphonious than the name in use at present. “It is nothing of the sort,” said Mr F. W. Johnston. “You tell him to say it quickly two or three times, that is the test.” “Why not ‘Bank Peninsula?’ ” asked Mr F. D. Sargent. It was decided to object to any change from the name in use at present--“Arthur’s Pass.”
