Viscount Allenbv proposed the toast of “ Prosperitv to Finland ” at the dinner of the Anglo-Finnish Society, which was held last night .in celebration of the twelfth anniversary of Finland obtaining its independence. Finland, he -aid. had made itself consolidated and ;ecure through the hearts of its people. M Herman Saastomoinen, Finnish ‘Minister replying, referred to Finland’s close relations with Britain which, he said, was Finland’s best customer. Their

Prior to 1917 Finland was united to the Russian Empire as an autonomous Grand Duchy. Following the revolution in Russia the House of Represen tatives unanimously declared Finland a free and independent State, and she has been recognised as such by the Powers. The present constitution of Finland as a Republic dates from July, 1919. ______
