TWO MINISTERS TO BE PRESENT AT ROYAL SHOW
There will be two Cabinet Ministers in Invercargill during the Royal Show at Invercargill this week, the lion G. W. Forbes, Acting-Leader of the House and Minister of Lands and Agriculture, 1 and the Hon P. A. de la Perrelle, Min- ; ister of Internal Affairs. The Minis- 1 ters will attend the show and as many as possible of the several functions arranged for the event. Mr de la Perrelle has arranged with the governing body for a visit to be paid by Mr Forbes, as Minister of Agriculture, to the local experimental farm sta- ; tion. On account of the rush \ for accommodation in Invercar- : gill, due to the large influx ! of visitors during show week, ; Mr Forbes and Mr de la Perrelle will stay at Winton and come into Invercargill each day. The personnel of the Ministerial party, which passed through Christchurch yesterday, j consists of Mr and Mrs Forbes, his private secretary, Mr A. Mulligan, Mr de la Perrelle and his private secretary Mr E. N. G. Poulton.
The Woolston Band, under Mr R. J Estall. played a fine programme from the new city rotunda last evening. There was a large attendance. A collection was taken up in aid of the band contest fund. A deputation from the Lincoln School Committee waited on the Par- ! liamentary Committee on Education | on Saturday to urge that a district ! high school be established at Lincoln. The Minister of Education (the j Hon 11. Atmore) was not present, but the committee agreed to refer the matter to him. An emphatic protest against lack of cheerfulness in religion was voiced by ; the Rev Charles Chandler at the farej well luncheon tendered to him by the : Auckland Optimists' Club. Enlarging ! on the need of optimism in everyday ! life, Mr Chandler said that in his opinion the long face and the sallow complexion had done more harm to the ' cause of Christianity than all the bitter attacks of avowed atheists (re- ; ports the “New Zealand Herald”). j^ e knew of no happier band of men seeking to live in accordance with Chris- : tian ideals than the sunny-faced members of the Optimists’ Club.
