OPAWA CLUB OPENS SEASON.

The season of the Opawa Aa.ateur Swimming Club was opened this afternoon, when the improved bath was also officially opened. The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer), in declaring the bath open, said he was pleased to see the baths in such fine condition. The City Council had contributed £ls towards the work. He advised all the young people to learn to swim. Ability to swim provided a most healthful form of exercise. He hoped they would not only take to swimming but would stick to it. Councillor M. E. Lyons (president of the Canterbury Swimming Centre), congratulated the Opawa Club on the great strides they had made this year. The work done at the bath cost not less than £IOO, while the support received from local bodies amounted to only £3O. The main object of a swimming club should be, not to produce champions, but to see that every boy and girl in the district in which the bath was situated was taught to swim. Mr J. M’Combs, M.P., also congratulated the club on the progress made. Local bodies, he pointed out, were authorised to expend money on baths without having to charge the money to unauthorised expenditure.
