CARNIVAL AT LINWOOD.

A most successful carnival was opened by his Worship the Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer, yesterday afternoon at the Linwood Open Air School, in aid of funds for an assembly hall and gymnasium. Mr Archer, who was accompanied by Mrs Archer, made a tour of the school grounds and visited the various stalls in the new and up-to-date open air schoolrooms. Great credit is due to Mr L. E. Vernazoni, chairman of the School Committee, and to the secretary, Mr L. J. Macdonald. The fete will be continued this afternoon and evening with many added attractions, including a children’s fancy dress display. A Christmas tree was in charge of Miss Dunbier and the senior girls. At the work stall were Mesdames L. J Macdonald, L. E. Vernazoni, H. K. An derson and D. Jones. Mr North and the senior boys sold books, and articles priced at llid, were disposed of readily by Mesdames J. Railton, A. Butter field, F. Pratt, W. Biel and J. Ives. The sweet stall was in charge of Mesdames A. Rippon, J. Collins, Hyde, Bradley, L Wright, and the Misses Batchelor and Greig. The cake stall was presided over by Mesdames J. Leader, V. Jones, M. Fitzgerald and F. Fuller. Mrs A. C. Walker, Mrs R. Brown, and R. Black were at the produce stall, and lovely flowers and plants were sold by Mrs J. Simpson and Mrs A. Blacklock Afternoon tea, ice creams and fruit salad found a ready sale, and Mesdames H. Anderson, Eade, Harrall, Rhind, and the Misses Ellis, Walter, Maxwell, Rutland, Holden, and the senior girls were kept busy. Mr Ormandy, the head master, supervised the children’s sports on the grass of the Canal Reserve. The side shows were in charge of Mr W. Biel and Mr J. Ives. There were entries for a baby show and the prizes were awarded as follows: Girl under six months—Ola Cornbridge 1, Gloria Golding 2. Boys under six months —Graham James 1, Stanley Gawler 2. For decorated prams prizes were won by Irene Hatherley and Peggy Zimmer man. For decorated tricycles the winners were Daphne Judson and Arthur Rogers, and decorated bicycles Eric Read.
