“STANDS FOUR-SQUARE FOR BEST TYPE OF N.Z. CITIZEN.”

COLLEGE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS TO MEMBERS OF EDUCATION PARTY.

“ This Presbyterian College stands four-square for the training of the best type of New Zealand citizens,” Mr A. K. Anderson, headmaster of St Andrew’s, told the Parliamentary Education Committee, when it visited the college at 9 a.m. to-day. When the members of the committee drove up to the college, they were met in front of the main building by the Rev Dr Erwin, chairman of the Board of Governors, and by Mr Anderson, who welcomed them. The St Andrew’s Cross had been hoisted to the masthead, and boarders, some of them in kilts, were drawn up in a squad. The Union Jack •flew from another building. Dr Erwin said that the college was established thirteen years ago, and that there was ample evidence of its progress. The committee could see the type of boys the college trained and educated. Mr Anderson said that he regretted that the Hon H. Atmore, Minister for Education, was not present, and that the .school was not in session on Saturday morning. The boys heartily cheered the committee. Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., chairman of the committee, apologised for the Minister’s absence. He said that the committee wished to visit particular schools and to make a thorough inquiry into the Dominion’s education system, to discover how improvements could be brought about. He thanked the authorities and the boys for their welcome. Mr H. Holland, M.P., said: “I can assure visiting members of the committee that this is the most important educational institution in Christchurch North, and that it is doing magnificent work.” The Hon D. Buddo and Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., were members of the party.

The committee went on to the Agricultural College at Lincoln.
