MORE ELECTRIC CRANES. The desire of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to provide port facilities, together with the continual demand by ;he various shipping companies for the j?e of the electric cranes already in jse. has encouraged the board to instal additional cranes. Some time ago the Doard accepted a tender for four additional cranes from the firm of Sir William Arrol. and one of the cranes arrived at Lyttelton recently by the Port Hardy. A start has been made by the employees'of the Dunedin Engineering Company in the erection of the crane. The Kent, which is due tomorrow, is bringing a further crane. Mr E. Deegan, who supervised the construction of the Shell Oil Com pany’s and Texas Oil Company’s oil tanks, is in charge of the work of erect ing the new cranes. It is understood that the new cranes will remain on the Gladstone Pier, and that the four three-ton cranes at present in use there will be removed to No. 3 wharf when that wharf at present ‘ undergoing reconstruction. is completed. The usi of the electric cranes enables a quick dispatch of ships. Overseas ships occupying the crane berth at the Gladstone Pier are able to employ no fewer than foui cranes in addition to the ship’s gear SCHOOL FAIR. A school fair and exhibition of school work was held at the District High School vesterdav afternoon to obtain funds towards the prize fund
fpr the school. A large attendance of parents and friends bought freely from the stalls, and a satisfactory sum was obtained.
