A recent reference to the Rev. E. O. Bailey, a one-time vicar of St John’s, lends interest to this photographic group of the choir, now in the possession of Mr J. H. Fisher, art dealer, of High Street, who appears as one of the choristers. The group was taken in 1871 or 1872 by W. Sherlock, and a copy was presented to Mr Bailey on his departure from St John’s. The place where the photograph was taken is now built upon for the organ. Mr Bailey was standing just inside the door on the left when it was taken. Those in the group are: T. M. Gee, F. Lane, T. Gates, senr., C. Palairet, W. Anthony, J. Sharland, J. Anthony, Horrie Gates, Tom Gates, junr., Jack Costley, Arthur Ward (Madam), Charlie Mould, Ben Gates, Harry Bruce, Charlie Watters, Joe Sargent, Alf. Marshall, George Maine, Bob Turton, Harry Scott, Hollie Bruce, Bert Gates, George Pengelly, -. Taylor, and J. H. Fisher. The only survivors are Messrs Harry Bruce, J. H. Fisher, A. Marshall, George Maine, Hollie Bruce, Bert Gates, and George Pengelly.
