Why are milestones very unsociable? —Because you never see two of them together. How does a stove feel when it is full of coal?—Grate-ful. When is a house like a bird?—When it has wings. Why does a burglar always avoid the washhouse?—Because there's a “copper” there. What letter of the alphabet is most necessary to a shoemaker?—The last. Why did the pfen call his rooster Robinson?—Because he crew so (Crusoe). What is a cricketer’s favourite pudding?—A good batter. Why is a sheet of postage stamps like distant relatives?—Because they are only slightly connected. When is the sun most generous?— When it tips the clouds with gold. Why is it that aviators never wear fancy socks—Because they buy plain (bi-plane). Why is a clock like a discontented workman?—Because it is always striking. How many foreigners make a man impolite?—Forty Poles make one rude (rood).
