NAVY LEAGUE MAKES GRANT TO SEA CADETS.
The General Committee of the Canterbury* (N.Z.) branch of the NavyLeague met last evening; present—Mr J. F. Studholme (in the chair), Mesdaraes H. T. J. Thacker and H. Wyatt, Miss L. M. Creswell, Messrs M. T. II Foster, A. MacGillivray, J. Graham, G. H. Hume and H. L. Bowker. Colonel V. S. Smyth, who has undertaken the formation of a sea cadet corps, waited on the meeting asking permission to use the name Navy League Sea Cadets in connection with the movement. He asked for a donation to the funds of the corps. He stated that sixty-five boys were now enrolled in the Christchurch corps and another twelve at Redcliffs. So far he had been able to give the boys training in discipline only, but he hoped eventually that the movement would be on an equal footing with the military cadets, as New Zealand was so dependent on the Navy. The chairman said the matter had been somewhat hurriedly brought before their notice and they would like time to think it over. Colonel Smyth said that the corps could be inspected by members of the league in February. The uniforms would possibly have been procured by then. It was decided to donate-£lO in the meantime, the general question to be discussed later. On the motion of Mr Foster it was decided to write to the conference secretary complaining of the action of the Home Government in delaying work at the Singapore Base. The financial statement showed that receipts for the month amounted to £4B 13s. The credit balance was £159 11s lOd.
