RHODES SCHOLARS FOR 1929 CHOSEN.
AUCKLAND STUDENT AND OTAGO STUDENT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 5. The 1929 Rhodes Scholars for the Dominion are:— P. C. Minns (Auckland). J. C. Dakin (Otago). P. C. Minns is well-known not only as a brilliant student, but as a good all-round athlete. He played for the North Island Rugby team last year, and has also represented Auckland on many occasions. James Campbell Dakin was born in Invercargill in December, 1908, and after receiving his primary education at the South School, of which he was dux in 1921, he proceeded to the Southland Boys’ High School. He had a distinguished career at school, being a winner successively of the Junior National Scholarship and Senior National Scholarship (for both of which he gained first place in his province), and passing with credit the complete matriculation won a Junior University Scholarship and topped the list for New Zealand. He entered upon an Arts course at the Otago University in 1927, and, after having passed with high marks in Latin and French, is offering himself this year as a candidate for the senior scholarships in those subjects. During his career at the Southland Boys’ High School, Mr Dakin was keenly interested in all form of sport, He was a member of the school football team and captain of the cricket eleven, and, in addition, played a prominent part in tennis, fives and swimming. Since entering the Otago University he has been a member of the University B football team, and is at present .top of the fives ladder at Knox Collqge. The social activities of the University include membership of committees, and he is the vice-president of the Arts Faculty Students’ Association. He is the joint editor of the fortnightly paper, “ The Critics ” and associate editor of the “ Knox Collegian.”
