RICHARD BROPHY NOT A SUICIDE.
STAGED FAKE DEATH AND DISAPPEARED, BUT WAS RECOGNISED. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received December 4, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, December 3. Richard Brophy, former second-in-command of the Byrd expedition, staged a fake suicide at Coney Island last August with the object of getting out of sight. He succeeded until an editor from Omaha, who had been looking over a 3yrd expedition picture, last week recognised a man working on his staff is Brophy. Upon discovery Brophy igreed to return to his sick wife in \ T ew York, but overnight again disappeared. It was alleged that his friendship with a Broadway actress caused complications with Byrd and led to his dismissal in Dunedin.
