W.C.T.U. The annual meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday afternoon in the Clarence Road Methodist Sunday School Hall- Mrs C. Barrell presided over a fair attendance of members and friends. Devotional exercises were led by Mrs Pitt. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Hitt, Price and Counilian. A letter was read from the secretary of the loc: - Y branch, inviting W.C.T.U. members to

their wind-up social on December 14. Superintendents’ reports of the various departments showed very satisfactory work having been done during the year. The treasurer’s report showed a financial decrease compared with other years. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs C. Barrell; vice-presidents, Mesdames James, Campion and Ferguson; devotional leader, Mrs Pitt; secretary, Mrs Newth; corresponding secretary, Miss Meharry; treasurer, Mrs £Swanston; cradle roll superintendent, Mrs Counihan; superintendent Prisons Department, Mrs Swallow: White Ribbon agent, Mrs M’Lean; pianist, Brighting. The social committee was re-elected. Appreciation was expressed and a special vote of thanks passed to Miss Russell for the very great assistance she had rendered the union WHARENUI SCHOOL SOCIAL. The usual fortnightly social was held in the school last Saturday. Mr F. Comyns supplied the music, and Mr E. Hansen was M.C. Miss C. Coui sen and Mr Poeock won the Boston two-step, and Mrs Knight and Mrs Stanton the Monte Carlo waltz. Asad vertised in this issue, the next social will be held in the school on Saturday. November 30. PERSONAL. . Miss Edith R. Ford, a fiupil of Mr Alfred Bunz, succeeded in gaining her L.A.B. degree in the recent Royal Academy examinations. IRREGULAR PARKING. The absence of the Riccarton Bor ough Council's traffic inspector was sadly felt on both days of the Christchurch Show by residents living adjacent to the Show Grounds, motor cars being parked all over the place The proprietor of a bike stand, after suffering the first day from this irregular parking, erected a “No Parking Here ” notice in front of his gate. It looked official and had the desired effect. UPPER RICCARTON CRICKET CLUB. Playing on their own ground, Upper Riccarton Club were defeated by

Marist by four wickets. The following were the scores:—Upper Riccarton, first innings 42 (Tims 17) and 66 (Tims 11); Marist, 44 (Harper 12) and 65 for six wickets (Harper 50). For Marist, Kirk, Poff and Harper, and for Upper Riccarton, Clarke, Somer ville and Raxworthy were the best bowlers. UPPER RICCARTON BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. The newly formed Upper Riccarton Burgesses’ Association held its first meeting in the library on Tuesday night, Mr P. G. Clements presiding. A number of new members were proposed and various matters were discussed. It was decided to engage the library for future meetings for a period of twelve months for the second Tuesday in each month. SWIMMING. The School Committee announces that the swimming season has commenced, and that the Coronation bath is in excellent order. A scale of charges and bath hours have been arranged for the season, and tickets can be obtained from the caretaker.
