PAREORA BRIDGE OPENING. The Minister of Public Works has advised Mr Clyde Carr, M.P- as follows: “I am duly in receipt of your letter of the 22nd instant, suggesting that a Saturday afternoon be fixed for the opening ceremony of the Pareora bridge, South Canterbury, as such a time would be more suitable to the large number of working people who are interested in the event. I # am now making enquiries to ascertain what are the present proposals in regard to an opening ceremony. The matter is one which I think will be handled by the interested local body. I shall, however, advise you further in the course of the next" few days.” MEMBERSHIP DRIVE. Taverner, Minister of Customs:— “I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter forwarding a communication which you have received from Mr B. E. H. Tripp, “Orielton,” Gleniti, Timaru, concerning artificial silk piece goods. In reply, I have to inform you that . omitting primage, artificial silk piece good are, under the tariff at present in force, free of duty, if admissible under the British Preferential Tariff, and liable at the rate of fifteen per cent, if chargeable under the General Tariff. These rates are fixed by law, and cannot be altered without authority of Parliament. As I have already advised you the question of imposing duty on artificial silk piece goods of British origin, and of increasing the duty on those of foreign make will be considered when the tariff is being revised.” HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH NIGHT. It is understood that Sir Charles Statham, Speaker in the House of representatives, has been invited to give the address at the Speech Night ceremony of the Timaru Boys’ High School, Sir Charles has not yet given his replv. WEEK-END AT HERMITAGE. The Mount Cook Tourist Company’s special Labour week-end excursion trip to the Hermitage, Mount Cook, proved very popular, a good number leaving Timaru by the special buses on Saturday. Those who had not made the trip before were impressed with the grandeur of the scenery and also with the entertainment provided. For those who had made the trip before the Hermitage and surrounding had lost none of their appeal. ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE. The Star of Canterbury Lodge, 1.0.0. F. No 10, met in the Foresters’ Hall, George Street, the N.G. Brother A. Duggan presiding over a good attendance. Arrangements were made for entertaining the Grand Master for New Zealand, Brother D. Smillie, on his visit to Timaru on November 9. It was decided to confer degrees next Lodge night. Sick pay amounting to £27 10s 4d and accounts amounting to £79 9s 3d were paid during the last quarter. D.D.G.M. Brother H. Moffit and suite installed at the following officers for the ensuing term:—J.P.G. Brother A. Duggan, N.G. Brother G. Pauli, V.G. Brother G. R. Park, financial secretary, Brother A. Jordan, recording secretary, Brother O. B. Stringer; treasurer, Brother A. Y. Berry; warden Brother W. Cullimore; conductor, Brother A. Duggan; Chaplain, Brother H. J. Clark, R.S.N.G., Brother A. Craig; R.S.V.G., Brother R. Thornhill; L.S.V.G., Brother D. Cameron; R.S.S., Brother R. Clark; L.S.S., Brother If. Moffit, Junior; 1.G., Brother F. Davidson. Mr Justice Adams returned to Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. Mr R. W. Simpson returned to Timaru from the north on Saturday. Dr A. B. O’Brien (Christchurch), arrived in Timaru by Saturday’s express from the north. The Rev Clyde Carr, M.P., arrived in Timaru from Wellington on Saturday. Mr J. R. Sneddon, of Timaru, who has been in Wellington, returned from the north on Saturday.
