Racing and Trotting.

(BY

"ARGUS.”

RACING NOTES. There was some first-class racing on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The open sprint and the two-year-old handicap were disappointing, but the other races provided excellent contests. A specially pleasing feature about the meeting was furnished by the large attendance and the increase in totalisator investments, resulting in a good profit for the club, which has had to face a loss on the spring meeting in recent years. * # * * Three-year-old form at Wingatui was very mixed and difficult to follow. In the Maungatua Handicap on the first day Dutch Money won in decisive fashion, the field she beat including the three-year-olds Stealth, Blue Metal, Meprisant and Disorder. As she was meeting all these horses on from 101 b to 251 b worse terms than in the Dunedin Guineas, Dutcfy Money seemed to have the three-year-old classic race at her mercy. The result, therefore, came as a disappointment. Dutch Money was a hot favourite for the Guineas, but after being prominent all the way she failed badly when asked to go on in the straight. The substantial drop in weight did not assist her to run out the extra furlong, and her performance suggested that Thursday’s race had settled her temporarily. She may never be a stayer, but her brilliant’ speed will assist her to win plenty of races later on. * * * * Meprisant, the winner of the Dunedin Guineas, is bred on similar lines to Chide. They are both by the imported horse Paladin, while Meprisant’s dam. Disdainful, and Chide's dam, Reproachful, are sisters by Bonny Glen from Lady Disdain, who left two good performers, Bee and Snub, to Martian. Meprisant had his first race last month at Ashburton, where he began slowly and just got up on the post to beat Desert Song by a head. As a result of this and . his good track work in comany with Chide, he was a strong favourite for the Maungatua Handicap on Thursday, but he never looked dangerous. He met some trouble on the journey, but for which he would have been closer up. He owed his success in the Guineas to superior stamina and the first-class horsemanship of B. H. Morris. Morris did not bustle his mount, who still was at the tail of the field at the entrance to the straight, but over the final furlong he settled the opposition in impressive style. Meprisant looks like developing into a good performer for important races over a distance. * * * *

Beauty Light won the Wakari Hurdle Handicap in good style, finishing on with a strong run. He was, however, lucky to beat the Southland gelding Taramoa, who seemed to have the race in safe keeping in the straight, till overconfidence on the part of his rider enabled Beauty Light to beat him in the last few strides. Beauty Light has had several races lately, and some of his form has been so bad as to make the onlooker wonder what could account for the inconsistency.

There was an inquiry after the Kaikorai Handicap into interference by B. Brodie, the rider of Town Major, with J. T. Andrews, the rider of Royal Flower. The stewards decided that the interference was not intentional, but they cautioned Brodie as to his future riding.

The Shorts Handicap was spoilt by the start. The horses were walked up and were despatched fully twenty yards before they reached the barrier. This would not have mattered if the field had been in line at the time, but they went off at intervals, with Waving Corn in front. This advantage decided the race, as none of her rivals could get on terms with her. Waving Corn usually shows fractiousness when asked to stand up to the barrier, and the walk-in start was a great benefit to her.

The imported mare Celerity 11. Was responsible for a smart performance in winning the Ranfurly Handicap, though she had nothing to spare at the finish. She shot to the front about a furlong from the post with a brilliant run, but she was stopping at the finish As this was the first time she had raced since March, she may be better the next time she appears. She is a handsome mare, and at her best she represents good form, but she ran some disappointing races in the past when tried out in good company.

The two-year-old filly Kerbside, the winner of the Dominion Handicap, was not in the M’Lean Stakes, but the easy manner in which she won after making an exhibition of her opponents left the suggestion that she was the best ! juvenile at the meeting. She has brilliant speed, and further successes should await her. She is by Tea Tray from Kerb, a Martian mare who was a smart sprinter. s(t tfc ifc The three-year-old Night Lad has had three races this season. He showed speed in the Ashburton Handicap, but only for about six furlongs. Last week at Kurow, be cut up badly in a moderate field. There was nothing in this form to suggest that he was likely to show up prominently in the Ranfurly Handicap, but it seemed to be realised that he was likely to run a much better race, and he was made favourite. The support was well justified, as he finished second, beaten by the narrowest margin. A repetition of this performance will enable him to win races later on, though his Kurow running made him look a very poor prospect * * * * Circulation followed up her good performance iri the Mosgiel Handicap, in which she finished second, by winning the Telegraph Handicap after a desperate finish. It was an over-due win, breaking a run of failures extending for more than a year. The riding of A. E. Ellis was a strong contributing factor in the result. * * * * Assemble, the winner of the Clarendon Handicap, is a five-year-old sister to the hurdler, Overhaul. She has not done much racing, but she is a smart galloper who will soon be out of hack class. * * * * The three-year-old Inevitable ran another solid race in the Clarendon Handicap, but repeated his first day’s unucky experience by being narrowly beaten into second place. Inevitable I'a a very promising young horse who will be benefited by his recent racing, and he will be in better company before long.

TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting will close at eight o’clock to-night. * * * * Nominations for the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting will close at nine o’clock to-night. * * * s* Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will close at noon to-morrow. * * * * Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s spring meeting will close at noon on Thursday. £ * * A payment for the New Zealand Trotting Cup is due at noon on Thursday. * * * * The trotter Bramdean continues to do steady work at Addington, but he is not sent along at his best speed. It looks as though his trainer will have a difficult task to keep the Nelson Bingen horse in work, as he does not appear to be any too sound. ****•• i Mac Locanda looks none the worse for his recent racing. He won decisively at Methven, and his training work suggests that he will go on to further successes. F. G. Holmes has work-, ed considerable improvement with the pacer. * # ❖ 4: J. R. Kennerley is now sending Black Wattle along at a faster clip in his training work, but the Australian-bred pacer is some removes from being at his best. sic $ * The pacer Reylet is now doing plenty of fast work, and shows a good deal of speed. He looks best suited to short journeys. * * * ❖ The trotter, John Mauritius, is remaining sound, and is coming along the right way. When at his best he has a lot of and is a fine stayer. He is not yet being sent along at his best speed. **:}::* Sonoma Child has now settled down to steady work in training, and E. Carlyon has the two-year-old classic winner on the improve. * * * * Sarella is back in work again at Addington. At present she is somewhat in the rough, and she may not be ready for a few months. * * # * Rolex is now a regular attendant at Addington, and the pacer is fast getting into good racing condition. He may turn out a useful performer for E. C. M’Dermott. * * * . * G. M'Kendry is giving. Grace Huon plenty of work. She is not a particularly attractive pacer, but she gets over the ground fast, and looks to be on the improve. if; Sfc * Eugene de Oro was unlucky in his race at Methven, where he finished second to Arikitoa, being beaten by a narrow margin in the best race of the day. He should not be long before he is returned a winner.

INTERESTING SPORT AT WAIKATO TROTS

CHRISTCHURCH TRAINER WINS TWO STAKES. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, October 13. Fine weather prevailed for the spring meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club, held at Claudelands, Hamilton. There was a good attendance, and the track was in good order. Horses trained by G. S. Donald, Belfast, Christchurch, won the two principal events. Lindbergh taking the Mark Memorial Handi cap and Pearl Logan annexing the Stewards* Handicap by half a length after a great race, heads dividing several of the others for second, third and fourth positions. The public were fairly well on the mark for the first three races, but Gold Sovereign and Our Nancy, who scored in the next two events, were both seventh favourites. However, much better backed ones in Pearl Logan, Master Huia and Great Parrish were later successful. All started for the Introductory Handicap, with which the meeting opened, and backers went solidly for Paradigm, entrusting him with £417, while Sweet Memory (£287) and Te Ngutu (£279) were most sought after of the others. Wild Downs and Te Ngutu made mistakes in the early stages. Paradigm took charge after the first six furlongs, and going past the stands was twenty lengths clear of Te Ngutu, with Wild Downs half a dozen lengths further back, followed by Temuka and Sweet Memory. Of the leafiers. Paradigm was the only one doing his work correctly and he further increased his lead, but was eased up in the run home, eventually winning by four lengths from Te Ngutu, who was five lengths in front of Wild Downs. Sweet Memory was fourth, with Temuka and Togo's Promise next. Camui was the only defection from the Frankton Handicap. My Thorpe (£544) was first choice, with the bracket First Flight and Nell de Beau (£312), and Te Wahia (£305) next in request. All went away properly. Passing the stands Nell de Beau was three lengths ahead of First Flight with My Thorpe, Conder Bell, Kewpie’s Guy, Inverness and Peter Lloyd following as named. The order was much the same along the back. Nell de Beau was first to turn for home from First Flight and My Thorpe, and But First Flight then ran to the front and easily beat Nell du Beau by four lengths, with My Thorpe three lengths away third. Then came Conder Bell, Peter Lloyd, Limosa and Te Wahia.

All the acceptors went to the post for the Mark Memorial Handicap. Mountain Dell (£1654) and Lindbergh (£876) carried the bulk of the investments. When the horses came round, Mountain Dell was .ttended by Rookburn, Lindbergh, Great Peter and Warplane, but there was not much between them. Along the back, Mountain Dell was followed by Lindbergh and Goldman, and then Rockburn ran up fast alongside Mountain Dell, but he soon dropped back again. Mountain Dell was first to straighten up for the judge, just in front of Lindbergh, with Goldman about two lengths awav, the others being well back. Lindbergh then headed Mountain Dell, who tangled a bit, but soon settled down again. Lindbergh went on to win by two lengths from Mountain Dell, who beat Goldman by three lengths. Then came Cornelian, Tony Victor. Great Peter and Oakh'ampton. There irrere no withdrawals from the Hamilton Handicap. Etta Cole (£7lßl was most in demand, with Akenehi (£478) next best backed, while Gold Sovereign carried only £206. Floraline broke up at the start. Anseline led along the back from Gold Sovereign, Appeal, Peter M'Kinney and Etta Cole. Etta Cole broke, and there was not much between Anseline and Gold Sove reign as they turned for home, with Peter M’Kinney next. Gold Sovereign went on to win by a length and a half from Anseline, who beat Peter M'Kinney by three lengths. Etta Cole finished strongly in fourth place, with Appeal, Kolmar and Lackiewood next. Arachne was the only one that failed to keep her engagement in the Claudelands Handicap. Polly’s Picture lost a lot of ground. Along the back Polly’s Picture and Enawah were together well clear of Our Nancy, but before reaching the top Our Nancy closed on the leaders, and entering the straight the order was Polly’s Picture, Explosion and Our Nancy, the others having no chance. In a good finish, Our Nancy got the verdict by threequarters of a length from Polly’s Picture, with Explosion half a length away third. Then came Bell Dial, Haerangf Pai, Enawah and Hal Chimes.

Warspite, Great Peter and Tony Victor were scratched for the Stewards’ Handicap, leaving a field of thirteen to contest the stake. Most money was entrusted to Vendome (£523) with Pearl Logan (£470) and Mountain Dell (£382) next in order of selection. Crossing the top Bawldy Locanda and Pearl Logan were together, followed by Nella Dillon and Brutus. The order was much the same into the straight, where Pearl Logan drew away to win by half a length from Brutus, who beat Joy Bird by a head. Bawldy Locanda and Mountain Dell were right up next, heads separating them from the third horse. Bawldy Locanda was placed fourth, with Mountain Dell, Nella Dillon and Vendome next. Akenehi was the only scratching for the President’s Handicap. Peterson (£584), Etta Cole (£423), and Master Huia (£351) were best backed, while Floraline carried only £SB 10s. Peterson was in charge when they came through the straight again, attended by Wild Nut, Master Huia and Bell Dial, while Etta Cole was well back. Along *the back the order was Peterson, Wild Nut, Master Huia, Bell Dial, FloraHne and Etta Cole. Master Huia was first to turn for home from Wild Nut, Bell Dial. Anseline, Floraline and Etta Cole. In another good finish Master Huia prevailed by a long neck from Floraline, who beat Etta Cole by a head. Bell Dial was fourth, with Peterson and Kolmar next.

The meeting concluded with the Visitors’ Handicap, for which Great Parrish (£829). Nell de Beau (£460) and Belle Axworthy (£303) were most in favour. Passing the stands Nathaniel was in command from Andover, Gold Cast, Great Parrish and Nella Dillon. Along the back Nathaniel was followed by Great Parrish, Andover, Nella Dillon and Gold Cast. Nathaniel was first into the straight from Great Parrish, Nell de Beau, Gold Cast and Dealer. Great Parish then took charge to win by a length from Gold Cast, who beat Vanity Bay by a nose. Then came Nell de Beau and Andover;

HAWKE'S BAY NOTES. (Special to the "Star”) NAPIER, October 12. Huikai has been turned out for a spell until the autumn. The two-year-old sister to Phar Lap has been broken-in by Bruce M’Kay. It is reported that an offer of 1000 guineas has been made for her. Another good-looking two-year-old of Mr Gatenby’s, a colt by Weathervane from Rada, is also being broken-in and seems a likely sort to turn out well. The two-year-old gelding by Psychology from Paonui has had the name pf Child’s Study claimed for him. The Lord Quex —Fera three-year-old, in the same ownership, will race as Buddha. Lordlike is at present under offer to a Napier sportsman. Royal Elm has been turned out until the autumn, when he will probably take on steeplechasing again. Watch Officer, Manuiri and Royal Spark, at present being trained by J. Hockley, will shortly be handed over to his brother, W. Hockley, to train. Merry Damon, who is booked to make the trip to Trentham, is very well just now. Civilform, after three years’ absence from the turf, is in work again. Kick Off has gone on well since the Napier Park meeting, and is in nice condition for engagements ahead. The Hawk is pottering about and looks well. Always one that comes to hand quickly, he may yet win another race before he finally retires. White Fang is to be taken to Trentham and is just now as well as he has ever been. Great Charter has been having an easy time since he returned from Auckland. but he will resume work lyGascony is looking very fit, but F. Davis may have some difficulty in keeping him right for very long. He is a delicate customer, hard to get right and hard to keep right. Pohjola is to contest the Waikato Hunt Club Cup, and though he may meet something better than he has yet raced against he is in capital condition.
