SHOALING ON GREY BAR. (Special to the “Star.”) GREYMOUTH, October 13. Bad shoaling on the Grey liar and low tides are interfering at present with shipping movements. At high water there is .only 20ft 6in of water on the bar, which does not allow' of sufficient clearance for larger vessels going out. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED. As part of the work to absorb the local unemployed the Public Works Department is making arrangements to put a number of men on constructing two and a half miles of road from Mitchell’s to Inchbonnie. INJURED IN ACCIDENTS. Charles Broughton Wise was admitted to the Reefton Hospital as the result of injuries received in a collision between his motor-cycle and a car driven by Mr A. Davis- He received facial injuries and a broken thumb. The failure of the brake on his cycle to act while descending the zig-zag hill at Kumara resulted in J. Hemera being thrown heavily to the ground and receiving severe facial injuries. STORE BROKEN INTO. During Friday night Harrold’s store at Reefton was entered. A fanlight over the back door was broken and entry was gained by a ladder. Owing to the extensive stock the amount of the loss has not yet been ascertained, but no cash was secured by the intruders. Turtill left yesterday to attend the machine-gun n.c.o.’s training course at Trentham. Mr and Mrs T. A. Johnston returned from Christchurch yesterday. Dr Violet Raines returned yesterday after visiting Christchurch. HOKITIKA. FLAX GROWING INDUSTRY. (Special to the “Star.”) HOKITIKA, October 12. The flax-growing industry is receiving attention in the Weheka district. The drainage of Groves’s swamp is now in hand, and it is having a beneficial effect on the surrounding land. An Australian company is taking up the proposition with a view to flaxmilling on a large scale, including the growing of flax. Further south, in the Wataroa district, another company has a promising flax-milling proposition covering a considerable area of the Rotokino swamp land.s. TOUR OF INSPECTION. Mr Bernard Ward, chairman of the County Council, left for the southern district to-day on a tour of inspection. He will go as far south as Okarito, and later he will visit the Bruce Bay district. Arrangements are being made to provide hutments for a gang of unemployed who’ will be sent to South Westland to continue the extension of the Great South Road beyond Weheka, the present terminus of the motor road. It is hoped that the road will be extended to the Bruce Bay district within a reasonable time. BOROUGH FINANCES. At a meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council last evening it was resolved to meet monthly during the summer season. The treasurer reported that there had been a satisfactory collection of rates, and after meeting liabilities there would be a credit of about £9OO. SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY. The Power Board has decided to obtain a legal opinion as to the position under the proclamation granting a franchise to the Kanieri Electric Company to supply electricity to the mental hospital. Westland Power, Lad., is now asking for a revocation so that the permit can revert to the company, which includes the hospital in the reticulated area.
