NO OYSTERS ON THE MARKET NOW.

SHOPS DECIDE NOT TO BUY, IN VIEW OF MEDICAL REMARKS.

While the last of the season’s oysters are under suspicion from the merical authorities, in view of the outbreak of typhoid fever, some proprietors of city fish shops have decided not to stock them. Other shops are not dealing in oysters owing to their keeping qualities towards the end of the season not being as good as during the tlush of the supply;. Taken altogether, oysters are almost unprocurable in Christchurch shops now. One leading fishmonger stated to-day that, while not admitting that oysters hafi been the direct or indirect cause of typhoid, he had decided that it would be best for the protection of his customers if he ceased. to stock oysters so late in the . season, which nominally would close, at the end of this month. “ We closed down on oysters on October 9 last year,” declared another li<hmonger. “ This season has been an extraordinarily good one for oj r sters and recent consignments have arrived in good condition. It is recognised however, that their keeping qualities are not as good towards the end of the sea son. With the coming of the hot weather wc had decided not to stock them, and this decision was made before theie was any suggestion of trouble. *n future seasons I believe that there will be an attempt made to cut out the retailing of oysters after September.”
