VISITORS FROM JAPAN MAKE A STAY IN CITY.

improved trade is OBJECT OF THE VISIT.

Mr T. Yafae, a journalist on the staff of the Osaka “ Asahi,” Japan, and Mr Honda, a poultry expert attached to the Department of Agriculture in Japan, arrived in Christchurch Mr Honda is studying conditions of the poultry industry in Australia and New Zealand, while Mr Yabe is studying general trade conditions from the viewpoint of improving the trade relationships between Japan and New Zealand and Australia. Mr Yabe told a reporter that in Japan the poultry industry is a very prosperous one. The climate there, however, was not so favourable as was the case in New Zealand, and the Government had therefore been impressed with the necessity of studying the best systems of poultry farming. In Australia Mr Honda had purchased 150 birds which had been shipped to JapanMr Yabe said that the Osaka “ Asahi” commenced publication fifty years ago, and to commemorate the paper’s jubilee members of the company had been sent to various parts of the world, for the purpose of studying the markets and commercial conditions. The places to which representatives were thus being sent included South America, the Philippines, Singapore, Persia, Turkey, Africa and several of the eastern countries. “ J am one of those representatives,” he continued, “ and J have come to Australia and New Zealand. We want to extend the trade between New Zealand and Japan. The trade between the two countries has made great progress, especially during last year, and the tendency is for the trade to increase. We Japanese do not understand too well the trade and conditions of industry in New Zealand. At the same time I think the people of New Zealand do not understand the true Japan. Before we can expect an extension of trade between the two countries, the people must understand each other. So I want to report on the commercial, market and industrial conditions of New Zealand to the leaders of the Osaka “ Asahi ” for the purpose of encouraging trade between the two countries.”
