HEATHCOTE COUNCIL OBJECTS TO RATING.

The Tramway Board informed the Heathcote County Council last evening that the areas of South New Brighton and North New Brighton were excluded from the New Brighton Bridge special rating area. It was decided on Mr C. Flavell's motion, seconded by Mr J. F. Scott, that the council should protest against the proposed rating in the county, for the following reasons:—(l) That the Valley Riding had no land within eight chain? of any tramline, and not more than six houses within one mile of any tramline, and was -ten miles from the New Brighton Bridge, and was already paying a rate for the construction of the Ferry Road Bridge; (2) Hillsborough Riding should not be included, because it was eight miles from the bridge: (3) the Cashmere Riding should not be ii- the area; (4) the Avon-Bromley area was already meeting its proportion of the cost of the bridge in cash; (5) the arrangement at the conference was that the city should meet any extra cost, and if the board had not promised to give £ISOO the county would not be rated.
