A strange party of emigrants was sent from San Diego in California to Lord Howe Island in the South Seas. Lord Howe Island has been infested with rats for some time, so the islanders sent for a cargo of cats, but the rats overwhelmed the cats, and things were as bad as ever. Then the United States offered a boatload of. barn owls, and they were sent. It is believed that these swift, silent birds of prey will deliver the island from its plague of rats. If they do not, the rats will drive out the islanders.
