THE LURE OF BIG STAKES IN AUSTRALIA.

ANOTHER TEAM OF HORSES LEAVE FOR SYDNEY. (Special to the “ Star”) WELLINGTON, August 23. The last of the New Zealand horses for the spring racing in Sydney left today by the Ulimaroa, headed by two of the best of last year’s two-year-olds, Honour and Ceremony. In all, there were seven horses on the steamer, including the brood mare Pennon, who is going across to be mated with Moabite. P. V. Mason had Honour and Jaleux on board. He stated that he hoped to be back before the Wellintgon meeting, but Honour may not be raced at Trentham, for it follows too closely on the A.J.C. fixture. Honour has done well, but his trainer is not sanguine about his staying, although he stuck on well at the end of his two-year-old races. Jaleux is really going as a mate for Honour, but he shaped at Riccarton like a horse who would pay his way in Sydney, properly placed. Ceremony, according to his trainer, W. Rayner, has done particularly well, and is forward in condition. Last season he was a bad traveller, but so far he has done well since leaving home. If all goes well he will have his first outing in a six furlong event at Canterbury Park on September 7. Pedestal, also a three:year-old, is a big chestnut by Thespian from Eulogy, dam of Commendation and Eulalie. So far he has not raced. The two-year-olds, Pomp and Drastic, are the last of the Absurds from the English mares Pompyris and Drax respectively. Pomp, who is in the Breeders’ Plate, has shown himself a smart galloper, and has done well. The filly Drastic is more of the delicate type, and may require some nursing on the trip. These horses are due back also before the Wellington spring meeting. Their owner, Mr G. M. Currie, leaves for Sydney next Friday.

TE AROHA NOTES. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 24. Unique, in J. H. Wallace’s team, has furnished considerably of late, and cer-; tainly does not lack size. He is on the burly side, but his condition is solid, and he may soon be got into racing trim. A decided compliment has been paid Black Maire by the handicapper for the Dannevirke meeting. With 10.8, the Glen Albyn gelding would have to be at his very best to cope with the opposition, and on account of his recent accident it is questionable whether he will be ready next week. Last season Black Maire stopped in some of his races on account of carrying welter weights, and apparently he will need to contest open events before he is treated more leniently. The Te Aroha acceptors for Pakuranga are Queen Arch, Marble King and Bert Hinkler. Belle Star ranks as a maiden performer, but has given evidence of galloping ability. Mr R. Burke’s Te Apurangi, who met with an accident near Hamilton last season, is making a satisfactory recovery, and it is quite probable that he may be raced again in due course. The son of Archiestown has given evidence of pace, and now that he has furnished well, apart ffom growing in height, he should prove a payable proposition. Dainty Arch is executing nice work on the tracks, and will be racing again by November. She has settled down satisfactorily in her work, and every track effort will tend to improve her. G. A. Reid is keeping Glenstar and Trig up to their work, and both will be in nice order for the Marton-Wanga-nui tour. Glenstar, as usual, bears a lusty appearance, but at the same time is not gross in condition. Mr J. M’Nicol’s Glenison, nominated for the Marton meeting, has not been in work very long, and can hardly be expected to show winning form so soon, unless the fields she meets are weak. The Matamata-owned Star of the East has qualified this season at the Waikato Hunt meets. He has been jumping exceptionally well, and is class enough to do well at coming meetings. The two-year-old Acre gelding. Leasehold, is being handled by G. A. Reid, and it will not be long before he joins the track workers. NOMINATIONS. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
