CRICKET COUNCIL DISCUSSES TOUR OF ENGLISH TEAM.
AUSTRALIA WILL HAVE FIVE MATCHES.
Further arrangements for the tour of the English cricket team next season were discussed at a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council last evening. Replies were received from major and minor associations in response to the council’s circular, which set out the tentative itinerary of the tour in Australia and New Zealand. Five matches will be played in Australia. At a previous meeting of the committee, a cable from the Queensland Association was received, declining the offer of a match in that STate. The secretary (Mr W. H. Winsor) reported last evening that the Queensland Association had reconsidered the matter,' and would now complete arrangements on the same terms as the other States. Mr Winsor stated that in reply to a request from the M.C.C. that the match at Perth be eliminated and the total Australian games reduced to four, he had replied pointing out that Australia had made strenuous requests for five matches, and the New Zealand Council had agreed, not anticipating any objection from the M.C.C. He had pointed out, too, that the council was relying to a great extent on the Australian matches from a financial point of view. A letter was received from the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, in reply to the council’s circular letter, expressing regret that a match had not been offered to either Poverty Bay or Waiapu. Cricketers in Wairoa, Poverty Bay, and Waiapu would be deeply disappointed at being excluded from the itinerary. It was decided to reply expressing appreciation of the attitude of the Poverty Bay Association, and informting them that their proposal would be kept in view. The Waikato, Manawatu, and Nelson Associations wrote accepting the matches and dates offered them. The North Otago Association wrote stating that it possessed one of the best grounds in New Zealand, and suggested that a match should be allocated to the association. It was decided to reply that the council would keep the request in view. The Auckland Association reported that a special meeting would consider the itinerary at an early date. The Wellington Association agreed to the terms of the match, but asked that if possible the match be extended to four days. Consideration of this request was deferred.
