This cargo was unloaded between 9 a.m. on April 30 and noon on May 4 in ordinary working-day hours of 7.20 a.m. till noon and from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m. The discharge was thus carried out in 37 2-3 hours, or approximately at the rate of 2337 bags, or 188 tons, pet hour. The best working day’s discharge was 26,640 bags in 8 2-3 hours, which, the “Natal Advertiser” states, was a record in itself. OLD STEAMER S END. The old coastal steamer Waimarie reached Auckland on July 24, after being towed from Paeroa by the launch Sambo. The steamer has been lying idle in the Waihou Creek for the last eight years, and she had the appearance of a derelict after her long exposure to the weather. She was bought a month ago by Mr W. M’Kie, who will strip her of everything of value and then dispose of the hull. The Waimarie was built at Devonport by Mr Logan for the Northern Company in 1896 and was utilised in the company’s Paeroa service for the next twenty-five years. It was when the goldfields were in full swing, and It took at least three steamers to cope with the busy passenger and cargo traffic to Paeroa at that period. The service was first run by the company’s steamers Paeroa and Ohinemuri, and the Ohinemuri was superseded by the Waimarie and Taniwiia, the Taniwha being built two years after the Waimarie. After the gold boom broke the passenger and cargo service fell away until only one steamer was needed on t.he run, and the Paeroa and Waimarie were withdrawn. The Waimarie is a wooden twin-screw steamer of 245 tons and was one of the first of the Northern Company’s vessels to be fitted with electric light. Like the Taniwha, she has a large, open saloon, and carried as many as eighty passengers on a trip. In order to assist the vessel in the navigation of the shoals in the Waihou River, she was fitted with a large ballast tank and also a pump, which was capable of discharging 7500 gallons an hour.
