NEW BRIGHTON GREATER ‘ PROGRESS ASSOCIATION. i A meeting of the executive of the 1 New Brighton Greater Progress Associ— j ation was held on \Vednesday evening. ‘ the chairman, Mr Holloway, presiding. ‘ A letter was received from the manager , of the Christchurch Tramways notify- j ing the association that the question ‘ of a reduction in tram fares is under ‘ consideration by the board. It was decided to call a general meeting of mem. ‘ bers, about the middle of July. ‘ JOTTINGS. The motor liCEnses issued for last year totalled 583, and for' this year . 439. Drivers of motor»cars are requested to apply for their licenses im—mediately. The Maori Tea Rooms, Seaview Road, are being demolished, and it is understood that a modern building will be erected on this site. On Monday last a start was made by four unemployed returned soldiers in Rawhiti Domain, in connection with clearing the domain in preparation of the formation of municipal golf links. The work is expected to take about a fortnight. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton School Committee was held on \Vednesday evening; present—Mr W. Dean (chairman), Mrs H. 0. Brooks, Messrs J. S. Ainsworth, A. E. Lawry, and T. Robins (secretary). A letter was received from the Education Board stating that the commitw tee request for clay for the grounds, and for two new tables for the classrooms, would be granted” A telegram was received from Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., advising that no decision had been advised by Cabinet with respect to the purchase of land for school ground extension, also in regard to Junior High School. Mr Ainsworth moved that, in confirmation of the letting of a class-room to the W.E.A., that the association has the use of a class-room at a rental of £2 25 per year for the year ending March 31, 1930. Another motion of Mr Ains. worth’s was to the effect that further application for renting rooms, for a period exceeding one week, be placed before the committee for approval. The head master reported that the attendance was considerably less than the. roll number, this being due to the fact that so much broken weather had been experienced, and to the prevalence of severe colds. Miss Petrie had resumed her duties, and had quite recovered from her recent illness. The head master also reportd that subscriptions had been made by the children for the earthquake relief fund, and that since the resumption of the school after the recent vacation, cocoa was being supplied to the infant classes. The Visit ing Commitee for the month reported that the school ground required a quantity of screenings around the build ings, and that there were patches of blackberry which needed eradicating. The secretary was given power to act in these matters. Several minor repairs were left in the chairman’s hands {or attention. BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY. The weekly social evening in aid of the British Sailors’ Society was held last Tuesday in the Oasis. The successful prize-winners were Mrs Kershaw, Mr E. \Vyatt and Mrs “’hiteley. MINIATURE RIFLE‘CLUB. The New Brighton ladies concluded the second competition on Saturday. Miss Park came first with a total of 277, and Mrs Stokes was second with 276. Mrs Ragg scored 275, Mrs Ball 274, Mrs Buschl 273, and Mrs Bishop 272. Mrs Bishop won the “Sunday Times” certificate on the aggregate of [our shoots, and the “Bell" medal on the aggregate of sixteen shoots. The sale of needlework held on Saturday was quite a success. The Winners of competitions were: Iced cake, Mrs Jones, Bexley Road; baby doll, Miss I. Leaver, North Beach; cushion cover, Mr Nuttal, Central Brighton; apron, Miss Muirson, South Brighton; cake plate, Miss Pitman, Christchurch. The targets from the City of London Ladies arrived on Tuesday. This postal match was fired in May, and the re» sults were: City of London 570, New Brighton 558. The third South African match resulted: New Brighton 290, Epworth Ladies 288. CROQUET CLUB. A most enjoyable time was spent on Tuesday at the Parish Hall, New Brighton, when Mrs 'F. W’ard was hostess at a five hundred, flag afternoon in aid of the New Brighton Croquet Club. Prize winners were Mesdames Cramp, Clark, White, Petrie, Bonnington and Clark. The New Brighton Croquet Club held its annual meeting recently, the presi dent. Mrs Luxton, presiding. The annual report showed that this year ‘the club was in a better financial posiition than it had been since its incep—ltion. The following ofiicers were electcdz—Patron, Captain A. \V. Owles; president, Mrs O. Luxton; vice-presi~ dent, Mrs \V. Cooke; secretary and treasurer. Mrs P. Blunt; committee, Mrs F. Ward, Mrs B. Smith, and Miss Mazey, delegate to the association, Mrs F. Blunt. CARD MATCH. A very enjoyable card match was played on \Vednesday evening in the South Brighton Hall, between teams from Mairehau and South Brighton. There was a very large attendance, and South Brighton proved the winners by a very small margin. Mr Orsborn, president of the South Brighton Pro—gress League, extended a hEarty welcome to the visitors, and Mr \Valter, in responding, referred to the good fellowship that existed between the two districts. After cards supper was served and then followed dancing. SOUTH BRIGHTON PROGRESS LEAGUE. The monthly meeting of the South Brighton rrogress League was held on

Tuesday evening, Mr J. Orsborn, the president, presiding. It was decided to enter a protest against the inclusion of South Brighton in the proposed special rating area to be defined by the Christchurch Tramway Board, in connection with the new bridge over the Avon at Seaview Road. It was also decided that a deputation from the league, consisting of Messrs J. S. Ainsworth, A. E. Lawry, and H. Robinson, wait on the general manager of the tramways to discuss the South Brighton bus service and the reduction of tram fares. Letters were received from the Prime Minister and Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., in reference to the half holiday question. The Prime Minister said that he had taken a note of the league’s opinion and was referring the matter to the Minister of Labour. Complaints were received of the condition of several roads in the district, and it was decided to ask the Borough Council to attend to them, and also to improve Breeze’s Road from the New Brighton bridge to Page’s Road. A letter from the New Brighton Borough Council with reference to the league’s request for a street lamp on Estuary Road, between Beatty and Jellicoe Streets, stated that a report was being obtained on the matter. WHIST DRIVE. Last Thursday evening the weekly whist drive was held at Miss Skipworth’s, 47, Fisher Street, the prizes going to Mrs O’Donnell, Mrs Youngson, of Dunedin, and Mr Robins. NORTH BEACH NOTES. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The North Brighton School Committee met on Wednesday evening; present—Messrs E. A. M. Leaver (chairman), R. Parker (secretary), A. Florance,. D. C. Manson, A. 11. Henry, S. W. Brown, H. R. Davison and Mrs S. G. Goring. An apology for absence was received from Mr W. S. Bussell. The head master’s report showed a roll number of 254, and an average attendance of 223. It was decided to apply to the Education Board for a subsidy on £5 10s worth of books donated to the school library by Miss O. Hunt. A subcommittee was appointed to arrange details for the farewell social to be tendered to Mrs Hodgson on July 15. It was decided to arrange for a special working bee on August 17, to prepare the football ground. YOUNG PEOPLES’ SOCIETY. The North Brighton Y. Branch of the W.C.T.U. met at the residence of Mrs Norrie, Bowhill Road, on Monday evening. Mrs A. H. Henry presided, and there was a good attendance of members. A circular letter was received from Miss B. M. Harband relative to dancing, and the meeting decided that the president should reply, stating the views of the members. Committees were appointed to make arrangements for the birthday party. An invitation was received from the New Brighton Branch to a social on July 12. Miss Blackwell wrote stating that several speakers were available for meetings, and it was decided to take advantage of the offer. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. The result of the primary schools’ junior light-weight football competition is ample proof of the need for a football ground for the boys at the school. The North Beach boys have some really good material, but, owing chiefly to the w T ant of practice, the school team has won only two games of the six they have played. At present North Beach stands eighth in the competition, with four points, having scored 14 points, and had 43 scored against them. Efforts are being made by the School Committee to make a football ground. PERSONAL. Mr W. S. Bussell is confined to his home with a severe illness. Mrs E. Leaver was taken ill suddenly on Monday, and is making slow progress. Rev W. F. Knowles is still indisposed. Mr and Mrs Barnett, after several years’ residence at Bur wood, have returned to North Beach, and are living in Tonks Street. Mrs T. Hughes, Feilding, is visiting her brother, Mr E. Leaver, Osborne Terrace.
