Some Trotting Statistics For Season Nearing An End.

PRINCIPAL WINNING SIRES AND THE MOST SUCCESSFUL HORSES.

THE SEASON is practically at an end, so far as trotters and pacers are concerned. Only two events remain to be decided—one at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting and the other at the Waimate Hunt meeting—and they cannot materially affect the position of winning sires or horses for the season.

Evidence of the influence which imported blood now has on the sport in the Dominion is to be found in the table of winning sires. The four sires at the head of the list are American importations, while only two colonialbred horses figure in the first nine. Nelson Bingen was the season’s champion, his total being £19,726. His progeny won 76 races, and were in the money 212 times. Peter Bingen was his best performer, the’ National Cup, New Zealand Cup and Free for All assisting him to earn £2510. Jean M’Elwyn, a consistent performer, who was twelve times placed, though successful only twice, contributed £1430, while Kempton, Great Bingen and Nelson Tasker were others who materially assisted towards their sire’s record. Nelson Bingen has plenty of young horses coming on, so he may be expected to occupy a good position for some seasons yet. It is otherwise with Logan Pointer, who was second on the list. He died in 1923 and the youngest of his stock are five 3 r ears old, so that he will gradually drop back. He was a wonderful sire, who headed the winning list many times. His record for this season, under the circumstances, was remarkable, his progeny winning £18,317, lor 72 wins and 232 places. Prince Pointer was his best winner, with £2420, while Pageant earned £1485, Cardinal Logan £1250, Logan Park £llß2 and Jewel Pointer £1025. After the leading pair, there was a big drop to Great Audubon, with £8948, his best contributors being Talaro £llßs and Jackie Audubon £1165. Brent Locanda was a close fourth with £8359, towards which Dundas Boy contributed £2024 and Evelyn Locanda £1094. The progeny of Gold Bell won £7590, Gold Jacket £3225 being his outstanding performer. Harold Dillon, for many years the champion sire of the Dominion, was able in his declining days to furnish winners of £6850. He was followed by his best son, Author Dillon, whose progeny earned £6OOB, with Author Jinks £1350, Lingfield £IOB6 and Terrence Dillon £725 to head his list. Rey d’Oro, one of the young importations, had £5358 opposite his name for the season, Roi l'Or contributing £1530.

This sire is due to have a rapid rise in the winning list during the next few seasons, as his progeny have stamina as well as speed. Further down Wrack’s progeny earned £2539, but this is another of the imported horses who will see a much higher place in the list, as he.was represented by nothing older, than three years. Gold Jacket was the biggest winner among the horses racing this season He was placed six times, winning three races, and earned £3225. Glideaway was second on the list with £2560, the result of being in the money seven times, while Peter Bingen got £2510 for four places, including three big wins. Dundas Boy captured £2434. He was one of the season’s most consistent performers, as he won eight races and was placed in six others. He was followed by a high-class three-year-old. Wrackler, who won five races and was in a place on six other occasions for £2385. In spite of some hard racing he finished up the season with every prospect of developing into one of the best four-year-olds seen in the Dominion. Prince Pointer earned £2040 and King Pointer £IBSO. Then came Harvest Child, winner of four races and nine lots of place money, totalling £1709. Kohara, £1665, was one of the season’s unlucky performers, as though he was in the money seven times, he scored only one win. Other four-figure winners were Kingcraft £1650, Free Advice £1590, Roi l’Or £1530, Tiger Salve £lslO, Pageant £1485, Quality £1450, Mate o’ Mine £1440, Jean M’Elwyn £1430, Silk Thread £1420, Linkman £1361, Author Jinks £1350, Cardinal Logan £l3lO, Native Prince £1265, Kempton £1225, Elzear £l2lO, Talaro £llßs, Logan Park £llß2, Loch Moigh £llBO, Jackie Audubon £1165, Young Blake £1125, Evelyn Locanda £1094, Lingfield £IOB6, The Abbey £IO7O, Jewel Pointer £1025, Travis Axworthy £lOl6 and Ngatira £lOlO. Some of these horses have seen their best days, but Dundas Boy, Wrackler, Harvest Child, Kingcraft, Roi l’Or, Silk Thread, Linkman, Author Jinks and Travis Axworthy may be expected to occup}' prominent positions again next year, provided they train on satisfactorily.
