Dr T. Fletcher Telford, Medical Officer of Health, returned from Westport on Saturday evening. Mr C. de R. Andrews has been elected a member of the Public Service Appeal Board, representing the officers of the Public Service.

Captain W. M. Bell, New Zealand Army Ordnance Corps, has been appointed Ordnance Officer, Main Depot, and Officer-in-Charge of Trentham Military Camps. The appointment of Captain M. W. Buckley as Officer Commanding Wigram Aerodrome during the absence of Captain J. L. Findlay in England has been gazetted. The Hon Mr Justice Frazer, of the Arbitration Court, and his associates, Messrs J. L. Schmitt and A. L. Monteith, will leave Christchurch for Wellington this evening. The Court will sit in Wellington on July 8. Messrs C. J. Fineran, A. 11. Bloxham, II Firman and C. E. Pope will leave for the north this evening to attend the Dominion Conference of Tomato-growers to be commenced in Wellington to-morrow. Mr A. D. Baggs, A.M.1.E.E., of the Nelson telegraph engineers’ branch, has been promoted to Auckland. He has been succeeded by Mr W. M. B. Veitch, telegraph engineer of Timaru. The Nelson telegraph district takes in the Nelson province as far as Lyell oh the West Coast, and extends to the Clarence River bridge on the East Coast.

At a special meeting of the Otago Land Board held at Cromwell last week the Commissioner of Lands (Mr R. S. Galbraith) stated that it. would probably be the last occasion on which he would preside over the deliberations of the board, as he was about to retire from the public service on superannuation and had asked to be relieved of duty'. The War Relief Association of Wellington passed the following resolution last week:—“ln view of the contemplated retirement of Mr C. G. Fache from the position of Commissioner of Pensions, after forty* years’ service, the executive of this association desires to place on record its sense of appreciation of the sympathetic assistance rendered by Mr Fache, and collaterally by his staff, in connection with cases submitted by* the association for the consideration of the Pensions Board, and trusts he will long enjoy his well-earned rest from official duties.”

On Thursday last,. June 27, the Rev Jasper Smyth celebrated the ninetieth anniversary of his birthday* at Bishopscourt, the Bishop having asked some of his contemporaries to meet him. Mr Smyth has been sixty-six years a minister of the Church, and is believed to be the oldest clergyman of the Church of England in the Dominion. Though he is no longer in charge of a parish, lie is still in harness, and every Sunday* assists the vicar of New Brighton. My Smyth has resided in New Zealand forty*-seven years, mostly in Canterbury, and still rides his “push” bicycle, doing an average of four miles a day.

Mr W. J. Hastings has been appointed deputy registrar of marriages, births and deaths for the Waipara district, and Mr L. A. Whitham registrar for the Amuri district. Mr A. M. Satterthwaite arrived on Saturday morning from Wellington. Mr Satterthwaite has just returned to Christchurch after spending ten months in Europe and America. Mr Adam Wilson, manager of the Thames branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed manager of the Gisborne branch. Mr Wilson will be succeeded at Thames by Mr J. S. Columb, manager of the bank’s Whakatane branch.

Sir James Allen, who yesterday conferred with the Hon G. J. Smith, chairman of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, with reference to the Carnegie grants, left for Dunedin by the express last night. He expects to return to Christchurch in about a week.

Mr Kojiro Inouve, at present Japanese Consul at Portland, has been appointed successor to Mr Iyemasa Tokugawa, Consul for Australia and New Zealand. After returning to Tokyo Mr Inouye will proceed to Sydney.—Australian Press Association—United Service.

Mr C. W. Koll, who has been associated with the International Harvester Company of New Zealand, Ltd., Christchurch, as assistant manager, and who is now about to return to America, was farewelled by the Christchurch staff at a pleasant function on Friday evening. Mr R. W. Morgan, the manager of the company, in making a presentation on behalf of the staff, referred to the pleasant association that had been maintained by Mr Koll during his tenure of office, and expressed regret that he w r as leaving. Mr Koll, who suitably responded, said that he had always found his connection with the company exceedingly interesting. Mr J. W. .Macdonald, C.M.G., Public Trustee, and chairman of the Advisory Committee to the T. G. Macarthy Board of Governors, announces the appointment of Mr Harold Featherston Johnston, barrister and solicitor, of Wellington, as a member of the Advisory Committee, in place of the late Sir Charles Skerrett, K.C.M.G., K.C. Mr Johnston, who was born in Wellington in 1875, is the fourth son of the late Sir Charles Johnston, member of the Legislative Council and at the time of his death Speaker of the Legislative Council. He received his education at the Wanganui Collegiate School and at -Trinity College, Oxford, where he graduated as B.A. in 1897; he was a member of Lincoln’s Inn, and was called to the English Bar in 1897, and later in the same year he was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Mr Johnston served with the London Scottish in the Great War. He was president of the Wellington District Law Society in 1928, and is now a member of the council of the society. Under the provisions of the will of the late Thomas George Macarthy, the Public Trustee was appointed sole executor and trustee.
