STATUE BROKEN IN HAWARDEN CHURCH.
CHIMNEYS CRASHED ON TO HOUSE ROOFS. A life-size statue _in the Roman Catholic Church at Ilawarden was smashed through the rocking caused by the ’quake. Several chimneys in the township crashed on to roofs of the houses. The shock is described as severe. No damage is reported from Waikari. The boys at St Bede's and St Andrew's Colleges and at the Boys’ High School behaved very well. A class of small boys at St Andrew’s, who were working in a balcony classroom became rather alarmed but quietened down as soon as the master got them out into the open. At the Technical College the morning recess was in progress and the students were all out in the playground. At St Margaret’s a chimney rocked in an alarming manner. However, the i girls kept calm.
