CATHEDRAL BELLS RING MERRY PEAL.
SET IN MOTION BY INVISIBLE FORCE. The Cathedral bells rang a merry peal while the earthquake was in progress. The chiming added an extraordinary accompaniment to the shake, the bells, rung by a ghostly invisible force, pealing out as though they were summoning the people to a festival. It was no mere jangle of sound, but a fairly orderly and measured peal. The chimes continued for quite a long time, and one might have thought that the regular bellringers were at work.
