“ I WON’T HAVE COURT IGNORED!”
MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT CAUSES COUNSEL TO GIVE UP A CASE. There was a spirited difference between counsel and Bench in the Maintenance Court this morning, which ended in Mr Sta ey refusing to go on with the case on behalf of his client. He dissociated himself from the case entirely. Mr Sac ey was appearing for John Rankin, who last week had a maintenance order in respect of his wife made against him, by consent. Mr Stacey applied for a variation of the order. Counsel did not appear for the defendant last week. “ It seems that it is a habit of yours, Mr Stacey ,to try to get people out of the Court’s decision,” said Mr H. P. Lawry, by whom the application was heard. “ I resent that,” said Mr Stacey. “ This is the first time in two years that I have asked to have a man released. I refuse to take the brief any further.” So saying, Mr Stacey threw his papers on the desk and strode away. The Magistrate asked Rankin if he wanted another solicitor, and finally adjourned to this afternoon. “ I’m not going to have the Court ignored by Mr Stacey or anybody else,” were Mr Lawry’s final words.
