SPEEDING MOTORIST WAS IN A HURRY.

HE PASSED A TRAM AT 30 MILES AN HOUR.

Jack E. Roberts offered the excuse that he was in a hurry when he appeared before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning and pleaded guilty to charges of driving in a * .nner dangerous to the public and speeding on Papanui Road. Roberts passed a standing tramcar in Papanui Road at thirty miles an hour, and continued along the road at a speed which he increased to forty miles an hour. It was late at night. He overtook and passed five other vehicles. Defendant said that to him the road seemed fairly clear, and he did not realise that he was putting anyone in danger. He thought the tram he passed had not stopped, although it was slowing down. The Magistrate: I have threatened two or three times to take the licenses of offenders in these cases, and I will have to make a start shortly. Roberts was fined £2 and costs on each charge.
