“ IRON FRAME SAVED BEATH’S BUILDING.”
SEVEN STOREYS ROCKED, WINDOWS SHATTERED. “ The construction of the building saved it. It is bound together with reinforced iron,” declared a principal of the firm of Messrs Beath and Co. “ Considering the severity of the shock, we escaped veiy lightly. Three small windows facing Cashel Street were shattered They were in frames, and that was why they broke. AIJ the big casement windows are still w’hole.” Beath’s building is of seven storeys. As it there were screams from several of the women assistants, and one or two indulged in mild hysterics. Two of the windows from the fourth storey, and one from the fifth, collapsed in their frames, and broken glass clattered on to the verandah. In the tea rooms on the top floor there were many ornamental plates adorning the walls. Only one of these spread itself on the floor.
