FIRST SPARROW SHOOT OF CHRISTCHURCH CLUB HELD ON SATURDAY.
The Christchurch Gun Club held its opening sparrow shoot for the season on its grounds at Sockburn on Saturday afternoon, when the annual Gimcrack Handicap Match for the E. F. Stead Cup was held. Twenty-four shooters faced the traps. The strong cross wind tested the skill and speed of the competitors, who had to get their birds early in order to prevent them being blown over the boundary fence. This and a hazy light, with a very strong vigorous lot of birds, made shooting difficult early in the afternoon, but the wind dropped later.
Conditions were fifteen birds off eighteen yards to commence, competitors coming back one yard for each kill -»nd going up one yard for n miss. R. S. Taylor won this event with fourteen birds, E F. Stead being runner-up with thirteen birds. Mr E. F. Stead, the donor of the cup, presented the trophy, which will be held for twelve months, also a trophy valued at one guinea
In a first miss out, D. M’Gregor (23yds), W. R. Heney (23yds), E. Hammond (27yds), A. K. Brightling (22yds», Iv. Ower (22yds), R. S. Taylor <2Syds). J. Radford (21yds), and P. Truscott <26yds) divided the stake in the eighth round.
