CITY SHORT-WAVE STATION 3ZC OPENED.

CEREMONY MARKS UNIQUE OCCASION.

The inauguration of the first regular short-wave concert broadcasts in New Zealand, sent out from the pioneer station 3ZC, Armagh Street, this afternoon, was preceded by a little ceremony to mark the occasion. The station has a power of 250 watts and the wave-length is 50 metres. It is expected that with that power the programme would be heard at a great distance, certainly all over New Zealand and Australia. . The first speaker was Mr F. R. Plominski, manager of the station, who said that Saturday afternoon programmes be sent at present, but that later it was intended to have a service at least three times a week. ' Mr H. P. V. Brown, president of the Canterbury Transmitters’ Association, said that he believed that the station would be very successful. A request had been received from America for regular transmissions, and a station like 3ZC could well undertake to meet the demand. He expressed best wishes to all short-wavers. Mr J. T. Sutton, jun.. for Home Recreations. Ltd.. Miss Millicent Jennings, Mr J. Drummond (on behalf of the Press), and Mr D. Cossgrove also spoke congratulatory words. Mr I>. E. Parton, Telegraph Engineer, was amongst the guests at the ceremony. Miss G. Green was in charge of the microphone and opened the concert session in due form.
