LATE WIRELESS.

BY “

“AERIAL.”

News and Notes. Indications last night seem to point to fairly good reception conditions ruling for this evening and to-morrow night. Static should not be troublesome, and, although great volume—such as we have had at times—may’ not predominate in the case of D.X. stuff, still it should be good enough for ordinary home purposes. All this, of course, is presuming • the wind does not shift to the east or the north. Wasn’t too pleased with attempts to bring in 4YA at decent volume. Signals sounded deadened—blanketed. Listened in for some time, and, although the station could be heard (at about A 4) and was quite steady at that. y*et it could not be reproduced at a strength equal to that obtained from 2FC. Have a suspicion that 4YA’s new towers have not been of much benefit to Canterbury listeners to the Dunedin station. Has anyone else up this way noticed a change since the new towers were brought into use?

IVA. 2YA and 3YA, however, provided sufficient entertainment for the evening. No static. Very little fading. The Australians, tried after 9.30. showed signs cf a return to the strength they exhibited a week or two back. They were only fair to medium last night, but, although volume was not what could be classed better than a fair A 5, they were fairly steady. Very little static noticed.

Just in case Sunday night proves one •• out of the box ” here are a few details of 3LO’s and 3AR’s programmes for that evening, as contained in schedules to hand yesterday. 3LO—S.3G p.m.: Evening service from St Paul’s Cathedral. 10.0: After-church concert —the Mozart Trio. 10. ANSWERS TO INQUIRIES. « Aerial ” will be glad to answer any question pertaining to wireless, or give advice on the subject. Correspondents should give their names and addresses, not necessarily for publication. To Brer Bill: Sorry’ could not manage it. Had to fix up a receiver for a patient. • That circuit is not at all O.K. It certainly results in an increase in volume at first, but I am inclined to think it results in a partial or even complete paralysis of the R.F. valves. I found it out, too, in the course of experiments, but after a time the set

developed bad distortion. If your friend is using a Philips in the detector stage he will probably find the grid leak connected to “ A ” positive instead of. negative will do the trick. A point to remember, too, is that the past six or seven nights have not been at all good ones for testing out the capabilities of a new set. No, at the price, that valve is not such a good proposition. Personally. I find the 605 as pood as anything to be had.—■“ Aerial.” FOR MONDAY. 3ZC Christchurch (260 metres). 10.0 to 11.30 a.m.: Women’s session. 10.0: “Don Juan,” Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. 10.5: Tested recipes—kidney and beef pie. breadcrumb pudding, small nut-cakes. 10.25: “ Gazing One Dav ” Francesco Merli; “Slavonic Dance Theme No. 1 in G Minor,” Lionel Tertis (viola). 10.40: Short talk, “ Outline of -the Work of the Plunket Society,” bv Nurse Allen (nurse in charge’, Plunket Society in Christchurch) ; “ Prelude in D Flat Raindrops.” Ignaz Friedman; prologue, “ Pagliacci (parts 1 and 2), Cesare Formichi; “ Cheerie-Beerie-Be ’ (organ solo), Milton Charles; “Witches’ Dance” (La Tregenda).
