BY SINBAD. The shelter in the Square that lies Has long offended tasteful eyes— A squat, unlovely, dull affair, Not much in keeping with the Square. It blocks a truly noble view, And shocks the tourists passing through, Who stare to see so foul a sight Amid a scene of pure delight. Behind its walls of tramway green, The Godley statue stood unseen; But did they shift the shelter? No— The Godley statue had to go! And yet we fancied, for a while. That we again with pride might smile. We joyed to hear a jurist say: “Go take that sightless pile away.” But now, alas, do beauty’s foes A fresh monstrosity propose. One shelter must depart from view, So, in its place, they’ll fashion two. Not yet, then, is the danger past— The prospect makes us stand aghast. So, Mr Gould, we you implore Make haste to save the Square once
