ADDINGTON BURGESSES ASSOCIATION.

A successful fancy dress dance was held by the association in the Selwyn Street Hall last Thursday, over 250 persons being present. The winners of the fancy dress prizes were as follows: —W. Campbell, most original costume: F. J. Wigg, fancy dress . costume; Miss Donaldson, most original lady’s costume: and Mrs Breitmeyer. fancy lady’s costume. The novelty competitions were won by Mrs A. Anderson, Mrs Grose, Messrs B. Sloane and W. Griffiths. Mr M. Clarke officiated as M.C. The association will hold another social and dance on Thursday, June 27, and particulars will be advertised in this issue.

SPREYDON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

To raise funds for the church, a concert was held in the church on Thursday evening. The large audience thoroughly enjoyed the items, which were contributed by the choir members, Sunday School scholars, and members of the Bible Class, assisted bv outside friends. Those who con-

Mr Woodbtur (Clown), 1; T. Carrodus (Jockey), 2: Mr Walker (The Morning After the Night Before), 3. SPREYDON PUBLIC LIBRARY. The official opening of the library took place on Thursday, Councillor F. Cooke, patron, presiding. Apologies were received from Councillors D. G. Sullivan, M.P.. A. E, Armstrong and Mrs Fraer, Messrs A. T. Smith, F. C. Schwartz and W. H. Winsor. Mr E. Howard, M.P., in declaring the library open, congratulated the committee on the excellent start it had made, there

being over 1000 books on the shelves. Mr J. Scouse, chairman of the committee, thanked all residents who had assisted financially and by donating books. Councillor Dr H. T. J. Thacker, Deputy-Mayor, apologised for the absence of the Mayor, and stated that the district should possess a social hall, and when required he would do everything possible to assist in that direction. Other speakers were Councillors J. and E. Parlane, M. Lyons and T. Butterfield, Messrs R. Nairn, W. Gahagan, Jones, D. Sykes and J. Clemens. A vote of thanks was accorded to Councillor E. Parlane and the Addington Library for donations of books. Supper was provided by the ladies of the committee. LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE, M.U., 1.0.0. F. The lodge met on Monday evening, N.G. Brother A. J. Forsyth presiding. Correspondence was received from the district secretary with reference to the special district conference on July 12. and enclosing an amendment to the matter to be discussed at that conference. It was also stated in the letter that the district had decided to present a jewel to the member admitting th-* most benefit members during 1929. A report on the proposed auditing classes was also received.

Arrangements were made to entertain the Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge on the occasion of the next meeting. At the conclusion of the business most of the members attended the Loyal Benevolent Lodge.

SOMERFIELD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Somerfield School Committee was held on Wednesday, Mr F. Milne presiding. The head master reported an average attendance of 460 on a roll of 493. A singing class, conducted by Mr S\ r dney Williamson, had had a successful opening, the average attendance being 120 pupils. The children were very enthusiastic and would benefit by the instruction. Permission was given the Methodist Church to use a room in the school for the purpose of conducting Sunday School classes until their new | church in Barrington Street was completed. It Was decided to hold a carnival dance in Beckenham Hall on Wednesday, July 3. ADDINGTON LEAGUE SOCIAL CLUB. There was a good attendance at the weekly dance held in the Selwyn Street Hall by the Addington League Social Club last Tuesday. Novelty prizes were won by the following:— Monte Carlo, Miss Lake and Mr Cham berlain; lucky spot one step. Miss Ford and Mr Hay; lucky number,.Miss Read and Mr St.uthridge. A fox t.rot competition will commence next Tuesdav. Prizes and judges are advertised in this issue. WASHINGTON LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Lodge was held on Monday, Noble Grand Brother V. Line presiding. Sev eral brothers were reported on the sick list and the sum of £24 6s 9d was passed for sick pay. It was decided that letters of condolence he sent to

the following brothers in their recent sad bereavements:—Brother Taigel and Deakins, P.G. Master Brother Roy Cooper (of Auckland, on the death of his daughter) and to Brother Deans Richie (Grand Treasurer for Dunedin, on the death of his father). Brother Webb was granted a transfer to Waimate Lodge. Two candidates were proposed for membership. Brother H. E. Barnsby, P.G., was elected to the position of Vice Grand in place of Brother S. Fleming, who has resigned. Brother R. Garters (P.G.), G. Land (P.G.), J. Hunton (P.G.), L. W. Cooper (P.G.) and J. M’Cullough (P.G.) were elected as a Standing Committee. An address by Dr Sheffield was very much appreciated. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the officers and members of Ridgely Lodge for their attendance, Brother W. Greenslade, P.G., responding. ADDINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The monthl3 r meeting of the committee of the Addington Public Library was held on Wednesday, the president, Mr E. Parlane presiding. Mrs I. Robinson reported that Mr E. Clark, who had been in the hospital, was progressing favourably. Mrs I. Thompson, who had acted as a librarian for several years, tendered her resignation. The secretary was instructed to convey to Mrs Thompson the committee’s thanks for her past services. It was decided to send a parcel of books to the Spreydon Library, as the Spreydon people had supported the Addington Library when it was opened. Mr P. Gordon conveyed the committee’s congratulations to Mr Parlane on his election to the City Council. Mr Parlane returned thanks and assured the members that he would do his best to serve the Christchurch district generally. The offer of Mrs Robinson to act as librarian on Saturday afternoons was accepted with thanks SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting was held on Monday. The Social Committee reported that two successful gatherings had been held and had resulted in over £9 being raised. It was decided that the proceeds of the first social should be handed over to the head master to purchase books for the classes’ reference library. The head master report ed the roll number 226, and the average attendance 206. It was resolved that the committee should provide the necessary material to supply the scholars with a cup of hot cocoa during the winter months. KINDERGARTEN. The Selwyn Kindergarten Committee met on Wednesday, Mrs Hamlin pre siding. An apology was received from Mrs Atkinson. Mrs M’Mullan was welcomed as a new members of the committee. The committee accepted with pleasure two prints for the kindergarten from Miss A. Gabb, and one from Miss T. Harding. It was reported that the jumble sale had realised £9 6s, and it was decided to thank all those who helped to make it a success. social evening will be held on June 22.
