The Arc de Triomphe, situated in the west end of the Champs Elysees in Paris, is the most magnificent, as well as the most expensive, monumental arch ever erected. It was commenced in 1806 by Napoleon 1., and was not* finished till 1836, after the accession of Louis Philippe. It is said to have cost nearly £400,000.
