N.S.W. SAVED IN MEANTIME FROM GENERAL STRIKE.
POLICE REINFORCEMENTS SENT TO COALFIELDS
(United Press Assn.-—By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright.)
(Received June 15, 9.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 15.
The complete capitulation by the Central Council of the Miners’ Federation to all the demands of the Engine Drivers’ Association has temporarily averted a general coal strike, nevertheless the Council has to obtain a satisfactory basis for getting its idle men in the north back to work speedily before the danger is over. The Council recommended the appointment of a special committee to endeavour to suppress mass picketing. It also agreed to appoint a committee of three to investigate the charges of engine drivers that their members have been accused of treachery by the miners on the coal fields because they carried out the instructions of the Combined Unions to remain at- work.
Meanwhile reports from Ktirri Kurri disclose that the miners yesterday threatened to picket the collieries in that district. Strong forces of police
from Newcastle were drafted to a secret rendezvous on the coal fields last night in anticipation of trouble during the week-end.
The engine drivers at Killingworth decided not to haul any more coal. Advices from Brisbane state ’. that Queensland is not likely to be affected by the strike.—Australian Press Association.
