YOUNG GIRLS MUST BE PROTECTED, SAYS JUDGE.

Per Press Association. HAMILTON, June 14. In the Supreme Court Mr Justice Herdman passed sentence of two years* Borstal treatment on John Stewart Jeffrey, aged eighteen, for indecent assault on a girl of twenty at Frankton. The jury had acquitted Jeffrey on a charge of attempted rape and recommended mercy on account of the encouragement given by the girl. She had met him for the first time at a dance, accepted his escort home, and allowed him to embrace and kiss her.

The Judge agreed that there had been encouragement, but said that it was his duty' to protect young girls against men who endeavoured to satisfy their passions in this way. Frederick T. K. May, who is already serving ten years for rape, was convicted on two charges of forgery and sentenced to two years' on each charge to be concurrent with the present sentence. William Thomas, a miner, was sentenced to seven years’ hard labour for indecent assault on a small boy at Ngaruawahia.
