SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

• The monthly meeting of the Rangi ora School Committee was held on Wednesday evening; present—Mes- s C W. Tyler (chairman), T. May, J Tweedie, J. M. Fraser and W. A. Rowse. Mr A. R. Chambers, a member of the staff, wrote tendering his resignation, having been appointed to a position in South Canterbury. The resignation was accepted, and it was decided that a letter be sent thanking Mr Chambers for his services. The secretary of the Canterbury Education Board wrote stating that the board did not supply re-fills for first aid outfits, it being a matter for the committee to deal with. The head master reported that the roll number at the end of the term was 391, the average attendance being 364. Since the holidays the roll had increased by seven, yet the average attendance had slightly decreased, partly due to sickness. There had been changes in the staff during the month, Mr Lam port having taken up his duties on May 27. Owing to the illness of MissDavidson, Mr Gillespie had joined the staff as relieving assistant. With other changes pending, it would be difficult to show as good results as could be wished for. The report was received The chairman reported that Mr B Riley had visited the school, and a number of matters in conection with the school and grounds had been brought before him. Several of the requests would have to go before the board for consideration. However, an application for shingle for filling was granted up to 50 square yards. The request by the head master fox a gramophone for use in the school „was granted. The head master stated that the board had employed a man to clean and tidy up the grounds. There was, however, a lot of work to be done to put the grounds in proper order. WOMEN’S GUILD FORMED A Women’s Guild has been formed in connection with John Knox Church, with a membership of nearly fifty. The executive officers elected were:—President, Mrs W. R. Hutchison; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames J. Stevenson, T Wyllie, T. S. Hanna, R. Hegan, C. J Roseveare; secretary, Mrs A. L. Lock hart; treasurer, Mrs C. J. Keir; com mittee, Mesdames Hamilton, King. Sutherland, W. Keir, Marshall and Miss Moffatt.

The objects of the guild are:—to pro mote good-fellowship and sympathy among its members, and to inspire loyalty to the Church; to encourage members to stand firm for the sanctity of the Christian home, and to help parents to realise their great responsibility and the power of their influence in forming the character of the child; and to co-operate with the church board of managers in their efforts to promote the welfare of the congregation. Weekly meetings are to be held on Wednesdays, and the members of the guild are organising a big effort to help forward the project to erect a Suri day School hall and classrooms. One of the ladies, besides giving a donation of £SO towards the building fund, has generously offered a subsidy of £1 on

every £2 raised. On the men’s side, a gift of £SO has been promised, provided another £IOO is subscribed; and at a meeting of the church board of managers held on Wednes lay evening, the members pledged themselves to raise 1 the £IOO. CELTIC CLUB’S SOCIAL. To mark the opening of the Celtic Club’s season, a social was held on Tuesday evening.
