League

MARIST FACE SYDENHAM TEAM.

CAN HORNBY DEFEAT ADDINGTON LEADERS?

The second round of the Can ter bur}' Rugby League’s senior grade competition will be concluded to-morrow, afternoon. After that the four leading teams will play off on the knockout principle for the championship. If the winners of the knock-out round are not the team who were in the lead at the end of the second round, such leaders have the right to challenge the winners of the knock-out to a final match, w’hich will decide the M’Keon Cup competition. The following matches will be played to-morrow:— Sydenham v. Marist, on Monica Park No. 1. Hornby v. Addington, on Monica Park No. 2. Woolston v. Waimairi, on Sydenham Park.

In view of three of Martist’s best players being unable to play through injuries, there is a greater possibility of Sydenham wanning their match. In spite of the defections, however, Marist are still favoured for a win by a narrow margin. Spillane. Clarkson and Dobbs are the three Marist players who will be off the field. Sydenham have a strong team. Hornby and Addington should stage' a good game, and the possibilities are that Hornby will win, if they can strike* something like their form of last week Cliff Woods, who has been

seriously ill lately, will be on the field after an absence of many weeks The usual Hornby full-back, Palamountain, will turn out, and the only player who is doubtful is F. Reid. Addington, who with Marist are leading in the competition, will probably have J. Sanders back in their ranks. Without his generalship the backs have not functioned well lately. Waimairi should have no in accounting for Woolston. Sydenham v. Marist. Sydenham’s back division will lack Lamberton at centre, but H. King will forsake his usual office of referee to take his place. Hamburger and A. Drury will guard the wings, with Davidson at fullback. Turton and Davis should go well again as -fiveeighths, and G. Fraser at half-back.

This rearguard should prove almost equal to that of Marist, from which Spillane and Clarkson, two of the best backs, will be absent.. These two lastnamed players, at five-eighths, have started most of the attacks among the backs, and i is not likely that Gillespie and J. O’Malley, a junior player, will be able to put the same sting into the Green attacks. Bond, Poff and O’Loughlin will be in the Marist threequarter line, with M’Kendry at fullback.

Marist will be up against a good pack, consisting of G. C. Blazev, S. Le Warne, W. Le Wame, W. Drury, G. Goring and G. 11. Ilill. The ' lastnamed, who is stated to have played in the senior B grade for the Linwood Rugby team last season, has played for Sydenham in two games this season. He is a promising type of forward. Against this keen and heavv pack Marist will have Drayton. Ryan Flood, Sharp, O’Shaughnessv and Burns. It is likely that Sydenham will prevail in the forwards, but that the combination of Marist will be far superior in the backs. It remains to be seen whether Sydenham, by keeping the play tight, can go through to victory. Hornby v. Addington. If Hornby defeat Addington, and there are bright prospects of their doing so. the difference in the final scores may be the result of goal-kick-ing. Addington have no player with a sure right foot, while Hornby have

a long-range specialist in Davis, who will guard one of the wings. The team will have the assurance which a good full-back can lend to their defence, for Palamountain, after nursing an injured ankle, is turning out again. Smith and Mackie are down for the three-quarter line, with Wilkie and Howison at five-eighths, and Cliff' Woods at half. Minards will take Reid’s place if the latter is not available, along with Woodgate, Ward, N. Vivian, Carey and H. A. Vivian. Carey’s game last week must have impressed the selectors, for he has been put in the pack ahead of A. Vivian, W. Vivian and A. Cameron. The Addington team will have the great benefit of Sanders’s company, probably at five-eighths. The rest of the team will be much the same. as. in previous games.
