PERSONAL. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of Mr Edmond P. W. Nolan, as the result of injuries to his head sustained when he fell down a bank at Athletic Park on June 1. The late Mr Nolan was born at Dunedin on June 12, 1895, and joined the Union Steam Ship Company at Dunedin in 1911. He enlisted for military service in February, 1917, and returned to the company’s service three years later. Since that time he has been in the trans-Pacific department of the company’s head office. The late Mr Nolan was very popular with his fellow-employees, and was a prominent figure in Hibernian circles. The.death occurred in Halifax at the end of April of Captain J. D. Roop, a well-known master trading to New Zealand in the service of Canadian National Steamships. He made his first voyage to the Dominion in 1925, and last visited New Zealand in May, 1928, when he was in comjnand of the Canadian Transporter. At the recent examinations conducted by the Marine Department at Auckland, the following candidates were successful: Mr J. B. Gibson (Union S.S. Company), foreign-going master; Mr A. W. Lipscombe (unattached), foreign-going second mate, with pass in special signal test; Mr R. S. Cameron (Auckland Division R.N.V.R.), yacht master in New Zealand waters; Mr J. F. Lidgard (unattached), home-trade master (under twenty-five tons). MISUSE OF THE DISTRESS SIGNAL. Attention has been drawn to difficulties which are being experienced through the misuse of the distress signal by vessels which, though not in Imminent danger, have utilised the SOS signal for the purpose of obtaining tugs or other assistance. A notice issued by the Board of Trade, London, on March 14, 1929, states that the use of the distress signal SOS, except in cases of imminent danger, in which immediate assistance is necessary, may result in insufficient attention being paid to really urgent calls, in the belief that they are sent out by vessels not in any real danger. Where the transmission of the distress signal is not fully justified use should be made of the urgency signal (X X X). This signal has priority over all other communications except distress, and should be quite sufficient for the purpose of obtaining assistance by means of tugs, etc. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
