The Origin Of Gipsies. The name “Gipsy” is a corruption of -‘Egyptian* and perpetuates the erroneous idea that the gipsies came from Egypt. Various Acts of Parliament, indeed, refer to them as “the Egyptians.” Actually, however, the forefathers of the true gipsies of to-day were Hindoos, members of a race of people who were driven out of India by conquering tribes about the year 1400.
