WESTERN V, SUMNER. Western met Sumner on English Park. The ground was in fair order. Western kicked off facing the school end. Sumner attacked early, but Whittington proved hard to beat. Bell worked nicely on the left to go close with a well-judged shot. Then Western went down to force a corner, but Bacre cleared from Thompson's well-placed kick. Sumner returned and Stoneman had Colville extended to savo a smart drive. Then Ellis, receiving at long range, went close to scoring with a dropping shot. Just after, with twenty minutes gone, Barwell opened the scoring with a close-range grounder that Bacre might easily have saved. Western 1, Sumner 0. Sumner equalised almost immediately. Colville failed to hold a thirty yards effort from Howarth, and Stoneman rushed the ball through. Western 1, Sumner 1. Sumner had a chance when A. Bell, centre, came across, but Browne lifted the ball over the bar. A good effort by Harbufct, then a combined Western forward movement left Barwell in front, but the centre’s shot flew high. A fairly interesting first half ended with the score: Western 1, Sumner 1. Western were the aggressors from the re-start. Barwell spoilt a good opening when he failed to take a well-placed centre from Thompson. Then Whittington let Thompson away. The speedy winger transferred to Kelson, who had Bacre full out with a fast, high drive. Sumner rallied and from a goal-mouth scramble were awarded a penalty for hands. Stoneman gave Colville no chance with the kick. Sumner 2, Western 1. It looked as if Western should have had a fre«r kick for a foul by Howarth against Barwell. The “hands’* was not visible from the stand. Shortly after Sumner thrust along the left and Stoneman notched another with a great ground shot that found the corner of the not. The town men tried along the centre then and Nelson scrapped the bar with a splendid thirty yards drive. With a few minutes to go Western attacked solidly but failed to get through. The (Inal whistle blew just after with the score:— SUMNER 3 WESTERN 1 Referee: Mr Cawthbray.
