FROM THE “ STAR ” SIXTY YEARS AGO.

ADVERTISEMENTS AND NEWS OF JUNE 8, 1869. Colonel Whitmore arrived from Wairoa on Saturdav, wet weather having prevented his going the front. Wanted, an Office Lad; one who can write preferred. Apply to Mr Carder. “Times" Office, Lyttelton. FOR SALE. A Tilbury Buggy, in perfect order, and Silver-mounted Harness, if required. Apply by letter Box 39, Post Office. City Council. —Letter from Mr A. Moore, and residents in the Whately Road, asking for a gas lamp to be erected at the junction of Peterborough Street and Whately Road, and expressing their desire to defray the cost of an ornamental pedestal for it. A Meeting will be held (D.V.) at the meeting room, Windmill Road, opposite to Mr Hislop’s Gardens, for the purpose of instituting a course of instruction in Reading, Writing and Ciphering. Free of all charge. Those who have felt the neglect of early education, and are desirous of improving themselves, are invited to attend. x City Council.—The surveyor’s report was read and considered. It stated that two designs for a footbridge over the river in continuation of Antigua Street had been prepared, one being for a structure suspended on cable wire, with a clear span of eighty feet—estimated cost, £114; and the other erected on piles, with two spans of fifty feet each, estimated cost £7S. The Works Committee considered both these too expensive, and recommended that in order to keep the cost within the original estimate of £6O, a bridge of the ordinary kind should be adopted. City Council.—Letter from residents in Kilmore Street, calling attention to the necessity of certain improvements on the roadway between Madras and Manchester Street, in order to make it fairly passable for traffic. Councillor Jameson said the delay had been caused by Mr Nalder. That gentleman had a stream of water running through his property which winds about the roadway, and would necessitate in its present state the erection of several bridges or culverts before the street could be properly formed. The stream might easily be diverted into a straight course to the river, but Mr Nalder had forbidden any interference with it.
