Bill, a Lancashire poultry farmer, had sold his cote, and, with four friends, he went to remove it to its destination. Each of his companions took a corner and lifted it on their shoulders. As they rested half-way up the hill over which they had to travel, they missed the fancier, and each asked the other, “Where’s Bill?” when a voice exclaimed from within the cote, “Ah’m inside, carryin’ the perches.”
